Python Software Foundation supports the Python community by maintaining Python documentation and PyPI, but its small staff had to handle massive traffic and ensure reliable access for millions of users. With 66 petabytes of monthly traffic and nearly 800,000 users relying on downloads, code, and documentation, the team turned to Fastly for help, using its CDN and related services.

Fastly implemented its global CDN, Fastly Fiddle, and security tools through the Fast Forward program to improve performance, reduce operational burden, and protect PyPI from problematic traffic. The results included a 99% cache-hit ratio, more than 1.2 trillion requests handled, around 36k requests per second, and 2023 downloads reaching 284+ billion, while also saving bandwidth, energy, and egress costs.
