Case Study: Mercari achieves reduced operational workload and improved maintainability with Fastly Compute@Edge

On-premises Email Beacon System Migrated to Edge, Improving Workloads and Maintainability

Mercari is a large peer-to-peer marketplace app that uses email beacons to track open rates and drive marketing decisions. Their on-premises mail-beacon/log-collection system created high operational and maintenance workloads and was hard to change, so they decided to move that function to a cloud/serverless platform to improve reliability and manageability.

They rebuilt the mail-beacon on Fastly Compute@Edge so edge workers handle requests and forward logs to BigQuery (analytics) and Cloud Storage (backup), with application logs to Datadog. Using a CI/CD flow (compiling Rust, Fastly CLI, Terraform) they achieved a stable, serverless deployment that reduced operational load, improved maintainability and logging, removed single points of failure, and sets the stage for migrating additional Pascal log-analysis functions.
