Introducing serverless Swift Building on Compute@Edge with Andrew Barba

Swift Cloud’s Andrew Barba set out to make Swift practical on the server by creating a fast, fully featured Swift SDK for Fastly’s Compute@Edge platform. The challenge was lowering the barrier for iOS and Swift developers to run server-side code without the complexity of traditional cloud setups, Docker, or heavy abstraction layers.

Fastly supported the effort by providing Compute’s core system hostcalls, allowing Barba to build a direct Swift runtime integration. The initial release was completed in just four days, enabling smaller packages, easier access to platform features like outbound HTTP and caching, and a more developer-friendly path to edge computing with Fastly.
