ConsenSys’ Infura is a core infrastructure platform for Ethereum and IPFS that provides developer access to blockchain data. Faced with explosive growth — from about 20 million requests per day to 10 billion as projects like CryptoKitties and a wave of ICO activity went viral — Infura needed to scale globally while delivering up‑to‑date block data (new blocks every ~15 seconds) without overwhelming its origins.

Infura adopted Fastly’s edge cloud (Instant Purge, custom VCL, API caching, gzipping and real‑time logging) to cache APIs at the edge while invalidating stale data in milliseconds. The result: roughly a 91% cache hit ratio, cutting 7–9 billion origin requests per day, keeping latest block numbers accurate worldwide, and enabling Infura to reliably support massive, real‑time developer demand.
