Foursquare, the location-based app company behind Swarm and its local search products, needed a flexible CDN to improve API performance and support a scalable software stack. They wanted real-time control over application performance and an easier way to test and configure their edge delivery setup, so they chose Fastly.

Fastly implemented edge SSL termination, custom VCL configuration, API acceleration, and streaming logs to help Foursquare fine-tune caching and troubleshoot issues. The result was a major performance boost, including about 150 milliseconds of reduced setup latency, which made the app feel faster for users; Fastly also helped Foursquare offload SSL termination and DDoS protection, supporting its move into its own data center.
