A Fastly Case Study
BloomNation, an online retailer that delivers fresh flowers from local florists, saw a major spike in abusive traffic after its national profile grew in 2019. The company faced DDOS, SQLi, XSS, and credential-stuffing attacks that forced engineers to spend time manually blocking IPs instead of building features, while also slowing page loads and disrupting the customer experience. BloomNation turned to Fastly for rate limiting and traffic controls to help protect its site.
Fastly’s rate limiting, tagging, and filtering features helped BloomNation identify malicious traffic, stop it before it hit servers, and reduce operational overhead. The result was lower load on infrastructure, improved page speed, and far less manual intervention; BloomNation said its load balancers had reached up to 90% CPU during attacks, and after implementing Fastly, the team no longer needed to access them for this issue. Fastly also gave BloomNation a more secure path forward with its next-gen WAF.
