Case Study: Betterment achieves auto-scalable application security with Fastly Next-Gen WAF

Autoscaling production application security in Betterment’s CI/CD pipeline

Betterment, an online financial advisor with more than $14 billion in assets under management, needed a way to protect customer PII and financial assets while automatically scaling security in its CI/CD pipeline. Using Fastly’s Next-Gen WAF, Betterment wanted to block attacks without ongoing signature tuning, false positives, or performance impact.

Fastly implemented an auto-scaled web defense with simple Ansible-based deployment so every new app instance gets protection automatically. The result was reduced Security team workload, improved visibility into threats, and zero false positives after deployment. Betterment also used Fastly Power Rules to protect APIs and prevent account takeover attempts, helping secure customer data and maintain site performance and SLAs.
