Fastly helps GIPHY cut costs and boost performance while serving billions of images daily

GIPHY, the platform serving billions of GIFs, stickers, and clips daily, needed a way to reliably handle tens of billions of requests per day and traffic spikes reaching 400,000 requests per second. It also wanted to improve security and reduce infrastructure costs while supporting a global user base. GIPHY worked with Fastly Next-Gen WAF and Fastly’s edge services to meet these demands.

Fastly Next-Gen WAF helped secure GIPHY from bad actors, while Fastly’s VCL, Compute, Object Storage, and Observability tools improved performance and developer productivity. GIPHY reported cost reductions and performance gains after migrating content to Fastly Object Storage, along with faster deployments and real-time health checks. Fastly’s resilient platform also handled major traffic tests without extra preparation, helping GIPHY scale confidently.
