Navillus Woodworks was commissioned to produce a large outdoor art installation for Millennium Park and needed custom molds for Ductal® concrete that could withstand Chicago’s harsh climate. Although expert in woodworking, Navillus lacked experience making durable concrete molds, so they turned to Fast Radius for additive manufacturing expertise, including Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) printed mold components and application engineering support.

Fast Radius printed, tested and iterated 21 sets of mold parts using MJF, providing rapid design changes and engineering collaboration to meet mechanical and thermal demands for multiple pours. The Fast Radius solution enabled Navillus to cast 400 custom concrete blocks in about 3 months, producing a striking, weather-resistant installation in Millennium Park that met the artist’s vision.
