The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) faced immense pressure from a decades-old, overburdened IT system, particularly during the high unemployment of the great recession. To modernize its operations, the agency partnered with vendor Fast Enterprises to undertake a complete system replacement for its unemployment insurance tax and benefits processing, aiming for a state-of-the-art, integrated solution named MiDAS.

Fast Enterprises implemented its FastUI software to create the integrated MiDAS system, which included modern claimant and employer eServices portals. The results were significant; error-filled employer filings dropped by 61%, non-monetary determinations increased by 105%, and the agency secured an additional $9 million in federal funding. The modernization also allowed UIA to improve efficiency and customer service despite a reduction in its workforce.
