Transocean reduces red zone workers to zero with FANUC robots

Transocean, a leading offshore drilling contractor, faced challenges in improving drilling performance and ensuring the safety of employees working in the dangerous "red zone" area of their rigs. They partnered with FANUC America and its authorized system integrator, ARC Specialties, to design an automated solution for handling drilling risers.

The solution implemented by FANUC used two M-900iB/280 FoundryPRO robots equipped with vision and custom torque tools to automate the labor-intensive and hazardous bolt-handling process. This system improved operational efficiency and achieved higher levels of consistency. Most importantly, the robotic automation successfully removed all workers from the dangerous red zone, reducing the number of people in that area to zero and creating a safer work environment.
