Concurrent Technologies Corporation advances friction stir welding for 30-ft parts in one pass with FANUC

Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC), an applied scientific research and development firm, required a friction stir welding machine for very large parts and a specific new application. Their challenges included needing a servo system capable of applying a tremendous amount of force and a gantry-style machine for extremely large parts. They partnered with vendor FANUC America Corporation and OEM Quickmill Inc. for a solution.

The solution was a gantry-style CNC milling machine tool built by Quickmill using a FANUC 0i-MF Plus CNC and powerful FANUC servo motors. This machine welds thick steel plates in a single pass and allows for real-time adjustments during the process. The result assisted manufacturing reshoring efforts by providing a North American supplier and gave CTC the highly customizable controls it needed to apply friction stir welding to more product lines, helping to introduce the technology into the US industrial base.
