Case Study: Irish Rail streamlines ticket validation and digitizes fines with Famoco

A Famoco Case Study

Preview of the Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail Case Study

A light and handy mobile device that changed the daily work of Irish Rail officers

Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail, Ireland’s national rail operator, needed to tackle rising fraud, increase ticket-validation speed across multiple ticket types, and reduce the heavy manual workload created by paper Fixed Payment Notices (FPNs). The challenge affected both revenue protection officers and back-office staff, who had to process fines and ticket checks more efficiently across a growing network.

Famoco, working with Theta, equipped Irish Rail’s revenue protection officers with the FX205 enterprise Android device and a custom application for ticket validation and FPN management. The solution digitized fines, enabled fast validation of barcode, QR, smart card, and plastic travel cards, and synced records even offline; as a result, Irish Rail improved productivity, reduced back-office effort, and now has more than 60 FX205 devices deployed, supporting 137,000 trips each day.
