The Homerton University Hospital’s Deployment of Patient Privacy Monitoring

Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a 3,500‑employee provider serving about 220,000 people in Hackney and the City of London, needed to protect patient privacy and its reputation as it moved further into electronic records and prepared for an influx of VIP patients. Rising media attention to NHS data breaches and stronger enforcement under the Data Protection Act and ICO fines meant Homerton required a proactive, auditable solution beyond its manual audit‑trail reviews to prevent insider misuse and demonstrate regulatory compliance.

Homerton selected FairWarning’s patient privacy monitoring—compatible with dozens of systems—and implemented EPR monitoring in about six weeks. FairWarning’s analytics generated automated alerts for suspicious access patterns (post‑discharge views, family or self‑access, VIP records), reduced manual investigation time, sped reporting, enabled role‑based thresholds and custom reports, and supported an education campaign to deter misuse. Homerton is using these insights to strengthen processes and plans to extend monitoring across community, PACS and pharmacy systems.
