Cerner High-Availability Privacy Auditing with FairWarning

Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas with ~19,500 employees and over 3,500 beds, relied on Cerner Millennium as its primary EHR but operated 128 clinical systems overall. Facing ARRA HITECH/Meaningful Use and HIPAA compliance pressures, the organization found Cerner’s P2 Sentinel insufficient for cross‑system monitoring, advanced analytics, and the reporting needs of its Privacy department.

After evaluating alternatives, Memorial Hermann implemented FairWarning® for application-layer privacy monitoring (while using ArcSight for infrastructure logs), deploying a high‑availability FairWarning® appliance pair with three years of online audit data and six years archived. The solution processes ~200,000 events/hour (~6 GB/day), provides proactive alerts and advanced analytics across Cerner, GE and CGI systems, and delivered the improved reporting and breach‑detection capabilities that satisfied the Privacy Officers.
