Carl Zeiss Meditec boosts data transfer 60x with FairCom

Carl Zeiss Meditec, a division of the Zeiss Foundation and a premier producer of optometry devices, faced a challenge with its Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) systems. They required a sophisticated data management solution to ensure long-term data compatibility across decades of patient records and different device generations, all while minimizing programming support costs and increasing throughput. They turned to vendor FairCom and embedded the FairCom DB database into their medical devices.

By embedding FairCom DB, Zeiss achieved a sixty-times performance increase in data transfer, moving data at disk I/O speed instead of slower serial processing. This provided perfect data continuity for patient records spanning 30 years and allowed for seamless upgrades from older devices with no prolonged downtime for practitioners. The FairCom solution was described as "easy" to implement, freeing Zeiss engineers to focus on other product development areas and eliminating technology obsolescence as a factor.
