Veolia makes nuclear decommissioning safer with Faculty's autonomous robotics demonstration

Veolia, a nuclear waste management company, faced the challenge of making the decommissioning of nuclear sites safer and more efficient. Their remotely operated robot, Dexter, was effective but the process remained slow and required significant human intervention. Veolia partnered with the AI vendor Faculty to explore how artificial intelligence could enable the system to operate autonomously.

Faculty implemented an AI solution that broke down the waste sorting process into steps, enabling Dexter to autonomously determine an object's type and material and select the correct disposal drum. A key failsafe was integrated so a human could intervene remotely if the robot was uncertain. The results impressed experts, with the human-machine team ensuring the robot was never stuck. Faculty is now working with Veolia to develop a real-world commercial solution based on this successful demonstration.
