Northern Powergrid avoids £51m in reinforcement costs with Faculty

The customer, Northern Powergrid, faced the challenge of procuring flexibility services for its electricity distribution network many months in advance. This limited participation from asset operators who lacked sufficient certainty, restricting a key method for managing network constraints. To address this, they partnered with vendor Faculty to develop operational load forecasting models.

Faculty implemented a solution using historical load data and weather forecasts to create accurate day and week-ahead load forecasts. This provided Northern Powergrid with a new capability to define its flexibility needs closer to real-time. The impact is projected to avoid £51m in reinforcement costs until 2033 and 700tCO2e in emissions by enabling a wider market for flexibility services and reducing peak demand.
