University of Groningen Ensures Continuity for Critical Applications Using F5 Solutions

The University of Groningen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) faced growing load and downtime across its centralized IT environment—affecting 25,000 students, 9,000 staff and 60,000 alumni—caused by increased simultaneous logins, diverse device access, and inefficient server utilization. To address outages of critical authentication and collaboration services, the university selected F5 Networks’ BIG‑IP Local Traffic Manager (BIG‑IP LTM).

F5 Networks implemented BIG‑IP LTM (including 6900 series devices) to front two redundant data centers and manage load across physical and virtual servers, enabling seamless failover and live server maintenance. As a result, the university eliminated application failures that had occurred about three times per year, removed downtime for maintenance, optimized server capacity, and delivered uninterrupted access to its IT and collaboration services.
