UK National Lottery Delivers Highly-Available, Scalable Website for Online Customers

Camelot, operator of the UK National Lottery, needed to guarantee maximum availability and scale to handle massive online ticket sales and sudden jackpot-driven traffic spikes. The organisation had been using F5 Networks BIG-IP LTM devices but rapid growth and unprecedented peak events revealed the need for a more powerful, scalable solution to avoid downtime and protect revenues and returns to National Lottery Good Causes.

Camelot upgraded to F5 Networks' VIPRION chassis/blade platform (deployed in two data centres), used F5 BIG-IP iRules for queuing, geo-blocking and mobile redirects, and worked with F5’s Global Services team for installation. The upgrade doubled application delivery capacity overnight, reduced peak CPU usage from about 80% to roughly 22%, and delivered a scalable, highly available platform that absorbs extreme traffic spikes and keeps online sales running.
