The University of Tsukuba Gains Advanced Firewall and DDoS Defense Using Single, Scalable Solution

The University of Tsukuba faced rising DoS and DDoS threats, an unwieldy legacy setup with multiple firewall and DNS units across campuses, and the need for application-level protection and DNS hardening. To address these challenges they chose F5 Networks and its BIG-IP product suite (including BIG-IP 7200, BIG-IP AFM, BIG-IP ASM and BIG-IP DNS).

F5 Networks deployed a single BIG-IP 7200 with AFM/ASM and DNS proxy functionality, consolidating boundary firewalls and load balancing into one manageable appliance and separating internal/external DNS resolvers. The solution delivered application-layer WAF protection, DNS resilience and centralized management—supporting up to 40 Gbps throughput, reducing the number of administrators required, and significantly strengthening the university’s DoS/DDoS defenses.
