A F5 Networks Case Study
The National Institute of Informatics (NII), part of Japan’s Research Organization of Information and Systems, needed to modernize critical academic services that were costly to run on a private cloud and vulnerable to weak disaster recovery, DNS propagation issues, vendor-dependent security, and DDoS/application attacks. To overcome these challenges, NII chose F5 Networks and its BIG‑IP platform (including BIG‑IP LTM and BIG‑IP DNS) to establish a centralized, cloud‑independent application gateway.
F5 Networks deployed a redundant BIG‑IP gateway across four data centers (went live April 2016), combining IP Anycast, centralized BIG‑IQ management, L7 traffic handling, WAF and DDoS mitigation. The implementation delivers high availability (all sites active; service remains as long as at least one center is online), smooth failover without DNS delays, total security independence, and effective protection against application and DDoS attacks—giving NII measurable resilience and centralized traffic/security control.
