Hospital Network Gives Doctors Reliable Access to Clinical Applications with F5 Solution

West Virginia University Hospitals (WVUH), a seven-hospital, 531‑bed network serving thousands daily, needed to guarantee high uptime for its Epic clinical applications and more than 6,000 Microsoft Exchange mailboxes while simplifying and speeding user authentication. WVUH was seeing multi-second login timeouts and single-domain-controller failures that disrupted clinicians’ access to patient data, so the hospital selected F5 Networks and its BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (BIG-IP LTM) to address these issues.

F5 Networks implemented three BIG-IP LTM devices (two inside the internal network and one in the DMZ) with SSL offload, reverse-proxy, health monitoring and authentication offload, supported by F5 Professional Services and CDW Healthcare. The deployment delivered higher availability and more reliable logins — WVUH reports it can guarantee 100% uptime for Epic and Exchange users — eliminated user-impacting downtime during Exchange maintenance, improved IT efficiency, and positioned the hospital to scale Epic to thousands more users.
