Government Agency Protects Citizen Data, Improves User Experience with F5 Solution

The Swedish National Board of Health, which holds personal records for about 9 million citizens and extensive historical archives, needed to maintain extremely tight data security while making it easier for authorised staff to access internal systems and becoming IPv6-ready. Facing costly, complex multi-vendor authentication systems, the agency selected F5 Networks and its F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM), adding it to their existing BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) to consolidate access management without compromising security.

F5 Networks deployed BIG-IP APM with integration to Nordic Edge’s one-time-password server and Kerberos-based single sign-on, enabling smartcard authentication and SMS OTPs for seamless, secure logins. The consolidated solution improved centralized policy control and network visibility, simplified user access, reduced IT management effort (saving an estimated 1–2 days per month), lowered total cost of ownership, and ensured IPv6 readiness — strengthening protection of sensitive citizen data while improving user experience.
