Engin Builds Broadband Aggregation Platform with F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager

Engin, an Australian VoIP provider serving residential, small business and wholesale customers, faced rising customer demand and operational complexity from a multi-vendor build-up that made fault resolution, troubleshooting and rapid service deployment difficult. To build its own broadband aggregation platform and deliver end-to-end voice and data bundles with high availability, service agility and lower upfront costs, Engin selected F5 Networks and its F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM).

F5 Networks deployed BIG-IP LTM as a high‑availability pair, using iRules and iControl to provide service selection, P2P rate‑shaping, DDoS/DoS protection, firewalling and traffic shaping while terminating DSL, EFM and NBN services; the platform supports up to 100,000 user services and integrates with billing/RADIUS for real‑time policy changes. The implementation delivered measurable benefits: more than US$100,000 saved in hardware costs, reduced operational complexity and training, faster carrier troubleshooting and improved user experience, and the ability to rapidly add revenue-generating services (with plans to upgrade to VIPRION/vCMP for further capacity and virtualization).
