City of Raleigh Protects Web-Based Applications with F5 BIG-IP ASM

The City of Raleigh needed to improve availability, performance and security for its growing web-based services while replacing an aging reverse proxy and reducing administrative overhead. Having already deployed F5 Networks BIG-IP LTM 3600 Series ADCs to boost performance, the city turned to F5 Networks’ BIG-IP ASM web application firewall to protect applications from layer‑7 attacks and help meet PCI and other security requirements.

An F5 Networks partner deployed BIG-IP ASM on the existing BIG-IP LTM devices in three days, using F5 iRules to address OWASP Top Ten risks such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting and layer‑7 DoS. The F5 solution increased citizen access while strengthening security and compliance, eliminated 12 physical servers and six proxy licenses, saved roughly 12–16 hours a month in administration, avoided additional hardware costs, and simplified management by consolidating functions onto a single platform.
