Canadian University Gets Ready for IPv6 with Easy-to-Deploy F5 Solution

McGill University, a leading research institution in Montreal, needed to prove IPv6 readiness as part of a network modernization initiative and to participate in World IPv6 Day. To meet that challenge the university worked with F5 Networks and leveraged its existing BIG‑IP Local Traffic Manager (BIG‑IP LTM) and its built‑in IPv6 Gateway capabilities to provide IPv4/IPv6 translation and dual‑stack support for public web services.

Using the IPv6 Gateway feature in BIG‑IP LTM, McGill quickly enabled IPv6—configuring devices in minutes, assigning IPv6 addresses to existing servers, and avoiding the cost and time of building new test servers. The F5 Networks solution made McGill one of the few universities to be IPv6‑compatible on World IPv6 Day (the only one in Quebec), produced no user complaints during testing, and demonstrated measurable time and cost savings by using functionality already available in their BIG‑IP deployment.
