Pilot-free Aerial Cavity Monitoring, a real world solution for surveyors

Dundee Precious Metals, a Canadian-based international gold mining company, faced challenges with safety and accuracy when surveying underground mine cavities. Their traditional method required surveyors to operate a static scanner near dangerous, unstable edges, a process that was time-consuming and resulted in incomplete data with hidden "shadow" areas. Seeking a safer and more efficient solution, they approached vendor Exyn Technologies to implement their autonomous ExynAero aerial robot.

Exyn provided a pilot-free aerial cavity monitoring system that could be deployed without prior maps or infrastructure. The solution allowed surveyors to safely launch the robot from a distance to autonomously map entire stopes in minutes. The results were highly successful: Exyn's technology enabled the scanning of six stopes with over 20 million data points, completely eliminating shadow areas, reducing scan time by three times, and significantly improving safety for personnel underground.
