CARE scales Chomoka to 5 countries with Exygy

CARE, a global humanitarian aid organization, sought to digitize its Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) initiative to transition it from an informal paper-based system to a formal financial service. Their challenge was to replace the paper ledger with a mobile application, called Chomoka, that could safely and accurately record financial activities for low-income women in rural areas with limited internet access, thereby helping them gain recognition from formal financial institutions. They hired vendor Exygy to help them successfully launch this digital-first project.

Exygy provided a technical audit and comprehensive project management support to build the Chomoka app. They staffed a global agile team, developed a unique SMS-based protocol for users without internet, and helped select affordable devices for deployment. As a result of Exygy's work, Chomoka scaled to five additional countries and was used by over 940 VSLA groups, representing 20,000 members. The platform was also repurposed during COVID-19 to disperse critical pandemic information and offer new services, significantly increasing financial inclusivity for vulnerable populations.
