Vancouver Public Schools Gains 10G Infrastructure, Increased Capacity, and Better Performance

Vancouver Public Schools (VPS), serving 23,500 students across 42 locations with more than 30,000 devices on its network, needed to scale beyond its 1G infrastructure to support a district-wide 1:1 device program, streaming video, VoIP and planned iPad rollouts. VPS turned to Extreme Networks, deploying ExtremeSwitching and ExtremeControl to address limits in switch capacity and multicast memory that were constraining services like classroom video and device management.

Extreme Networks implemented a stackable 10G switching solution that increased capacity, performance and reliability across the district, enabling online testing, personalized learning, multicast video distribution to classrooms and VoIP while keeping operations low. The upgrade delivered measurable impact — a move to 10G supporting 30,000+ devices, resolved multicast limitations for streaming, and achieved the deployment at a substantially reduced cost (a ~$2M list solution installed for roughly $150,000 with Extreme Networks’ education discounts and E‑rate funding).
