UNISC Increases its Wi-Fi Network Capacity 10 Times with Extreme Networks

The University of Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC), a 23‑year‑old higher‑education institution with about 13,000 students and 650 teachers across multiple campuses, faced rapidly growing BYOD demand and spikes of up to 6,500 simultaneous Wi‑Fi connections that pushed its legacy core to roughly 90% utilization. UNISC turned to Extreme Networks to replace the aging 2000‑era core and support a decade of mobile‑access growth while enabling public IP assignment for all devices.

Extreme Networks implemented an ExtremeSwitching™ X8 core (deployed with partner TechDec Informática), delivering roughly a tenfold increase in information‑flow capacity — the X8 supports up to 768 × 10 Gb ports and 20 Tbps — and immediately dropped utilization so the university now uses less than 5% of the installed capacity. The Extreme Networks solution improved network availability, supports cloud services and large numbers of mobile accesses, and provides ample headroom for several years of growth.
