Service Provider Algar Telecom Turns to Extreme Networks for Converged 10 Gbps MPLS Network

Algar Telecom, a Brazil-based service provider serving roughly 800,000 residential, business, government and operator customers, needed a high-performance, reliable and cost-effective unified network to support converged voice, video and data and to meet rapidly growing traffic demand. Algar turned to Extreme Networks, deploying a 10Gbps MPLS architecture built on Extreme Networks Summit switches and the ExtremeXOS operating system to improve efficiency, resiliency and service delivery.

Extreme Networks implemented the solution by adding 90 Summit X460/X480 switches to Algar’s existing estate (about 700 switches), enabling MPLS and Layer‑3 functionality, advanced traffic management and remote provisioning. The deployment delivered measurable benefits: a 10Gbps MPLS core, reduced activation times and lower operational cost through streamlined service provisioning, improved availability and resiliency under peak loads, and support for Algar’s continued growth (2.2 million RGUs in 2012, a 16% year‑over‑year increase); Algar is planning a full migration to the 10G standard with Extreme Networks as its partner.
