Moscow Internet Exchange Deploys New Network Core Powered by Extreme Networks

MSK-IX (Moscow Internet Exchange), which connects 600+ participants across 11 Moscow sites and regional exchange points, faced rapidly growing traffic (peak around 1.5 Tbps) and the need to move to 100GbE without any disruptive downtime. To meet these demands and build reserve capacity for future expansion, MSK-IX chose Extreme Networks and deployed BlackDiamond X8, Summit X670V and Summit X460G2 switches.

Extreme Networks executed a staged migration to a redundant core—installing dual core switches, DWDM fiber links and 100GbE-capable Summit/BlackDiamond platforms to allow live cutover and interoperability with existing kit. The deployment delivered a fully redundant, high‑capacity core that remains operational even if one core fails, reduced power use and overall time/costs, and enabled MSK-IX to onboard higher‑bandwidth customers and expand to new data centers while supporting continued traffic growth.
