Memorial Hermann Health System Delivers Secure and Reliable Wireless Network

Memorial Hermann Health System, the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas with 12 hospitals, 175 clinics, 5,500 physicians and 21,000 employees, faced aging 802.11g Wi‑Fi and a controller-based architecture that couldn’t support increasing voice, video and mission‑critical wireless medical devices. After evaluating options, Memorial Hermann chose Extreme Networks, deploying ExtremeWireless AP330 access points along with ExtremeSwitching, ExtremeCloud IQ and ExtremeOS to replace legacy controllers and boost throughput, security and manageability.

Extreme Networks delivered a controller‑less wireless architecture rolled out first at TIRR and then across hospitals and clinics, providing GRE‑tunneled guest access, real‑time spectrum analysis, HIPAA‑compliant controls and plans for Private PSK. The solution enabled resilient, high‑performance Wi‑Fi that supports about 11,000 concurrent users (≈5,000 guests), has eliminated a single point of failure, and will scale to over 6,000 Extreme access points (800 at the Texas Medical Center), improving application reliability and operational efficiency.
