Large State University Delivers Near-Limitless Possibilities to Researchers and Students

Large State University, a 24‑campus institution with 100,000 students, 17,000 faculty and staff, and $150M in annual federally funded research, needed a secure, high‑performance network that could move exponentially growing research data, support the medical center and campus services, simplify management, and reduce data transport costs. To address these challenges the university partnered with Extreme Networks, deploying ExtremeSwitching and ExtremeRouting components including Extreme VDX 8770/6740 switches with Extreme VCS Fabric technology and MLX series core routers.

Extreme Networks built a stretched VCS fabric across data centers, high‑density 10/100 GbE links to Internet2 and HPC, MLX core routing with MPLS/VPLS/VRRP, and sFlow traffic monitoring to deliver converged infrastructure, end‑to‑end QoS, and deep visibility. The deployment cut massive research transfers dramatically (examples cite reductions from up to 15 days to about 20 hours), scaled packet sampling to 100 GbE, simplified remote management and upgrades, and saved operational time and budget—enabling a faster, more manageable research network across the university.
