IX Australia and Extreme Partner to Deliver 100GB Peering for Internet Services and Content

IX Australia, the not‑for‑profit, carrier‑neutral internet exchange owned by the Internet Association of Australia and serving about 400 member organisations across 32 PoPs, faced exponential traffic growth, the need for a secure, scalable MPLS/IP network, remote visibility and automated provisioning — all with a small engineering team. To meet these challenges IX Australia selected Extreme Networks, deploying ExtremeSwitching (with EXOS) as its switching platform.

Extreme Networks delivered an EXOS‑based ExtremeSwitching solution (X870 Series) that enabled IX Australia to launch 100Gbps peering services in late 2018 (Aussie Broadband was the first customer) and to support up to ~600Gbps aggregate peak traffic and servicing of up to two million end‑user points. The Extreme Networks deployment provided cost‑effective, reliable peering, simplified management for a small distributed team, automated outage detection and reporting, and the scalability and automation capability to pursue 400Gbps/1Tbps peering and full provisioning automation.
