Extreme Networks Provides University with Increased Network Control and Ability to Better Support BYOD Initiative

The University of Northern Iowa faced an outdated 10 megabit network in its 10 residence halls serving more than 4,600 students, causing frequent outages, heavy custom coding by staff, and inability to support a BYOD environment. To modernize connectivity and gain visibility, UNI selected Extreme Networks and its OneFabric Edge solution—deploying K-Series switches, S-Series standalone systems, NetSight management software, and Network Access Control (NAC)—to deliver a Gigabit-capable campus access network.

Extreme Networks implemented 43 K-Series 10-slot chassis, two S-Series SSA switches, and NetSight/NAC for centralized management, NetFlow visibility, multi-user authentication and policy-based access control. The rollout (completed before students returned) delivered higher-quality, more reliable Gigabit connectivity, eliminated the need for a dedicated employee to write monitoring tools, enabled dynamic policy-based access for BYOD, and improved multi-vendor support—providing measurable reductions in man-hours and stronger security and user experience under Extreme Networks.
