A Extreme Networks Case Study
The European Physics Research Organization, a large astroparticle physics center with roughly 150 scientific staff and 100 technicians that analyzes and processes more than 15 petabytes of data annually, needed to facilitate communication, cooperation and the exchange of data‑intensive applications across a High‑Performance Computing (HPC) grid supporting thousands of researchers. Facing edge-switch bottlenecks, growing bandwidth and storage demands, and requirements for IPv6, virtual routing, flow control and large numbers of VLANs, they engaged Extreme Networks (using Extreme MLX Series routers) to modernize their core network.
Extreme Networks deployed Extreme MLX Series routers at the core alongside third‑party 48‑port edge switches populated with 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules, completing the 10GbE upgrade in under six weeks. The new infrastructure delivered a reliable, scalable HPC environment that supports thousands of scientists, processes over 15 PB per year, increased processing and storage capacity by up to 30%, enabled IPv6, reduced security and scaling issues, and positions the organization to add 100GbE when needed.
