A Extreme Networks Case Study
Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS), the third-largest district in Maryland serving roughly 110,000 students across 174 schools and 18,000 staff, needed enterprise-grade, scalable Wi‑Fi to support its 1:1/blended‑learning initiative and replace aging wireless infrastructure in buildings with challenging physical constraints. After an RFP and pilot program, BCPS selected Extreme Networks and its ExtremeWireless access points, ExtremeCloud IQ virtual appliance and ExtremeSwitching to provide centralized, secure wireless and network management across the district.
Extreme Networks deployed thousands of APs (over 10,000 planned, including AP121/AP330/AP350/AP370/AP170/AP230), enabled RADIUS authentication and separate SSIDs, and centralized control via ExtremeCloud IQ, delivering secure, district‑wide Wi‑Fi with no disruption. The solution supports about 45,000 daily users (projected to reach 100,000), simplified IT operations, improved classroom engagement and fewer discipline problems, and created a scalable foundation for BCPS’s ongoing mobile and digital learning initiatives.
