Aurora Health Care partnered with Extract Systems to solve the challenge of handling external lab results that were arriving as paper or scanned documents. With a large integrated health system and high volumes of outside lab tests, Aurora needed a way to eliminate manual entry, make results discrete and trendable in Epic, and improve physician access to searchable lab data.

Extract Systems implemented a customized clinical data extraction solution that identified, structured, pre-validated, and routed lab data directly into Aurora’s Epic EMR. The result was a 366% increase in document processing from 2011 to 2016, over 189,000 orders and 1.4 million test components processed in 2016 alone, a data entry time reduction of 40%, productivity rising from 8 to 14.25 orders per hour, and an error rate below 1%.
