Intuit QuickBooks Online wanted to turn the trust customers place in its financial tools into a scalable, customer-driven acquisition channel without relying on paid media. The challenge was identifying likely advocates and giving them an easy, on-brand way to refer friends—so marketing teamed with customer success to target high-NPS responders and test a referral activation strategy.
QuickBooks partnered with Extole to launch a targeted refer-a-friend program using in-app tiles, emails and social ads, then ran a two-week "burst" that doubled the reward from $50 to $100 for top NPS customers. The campaign tripled revenue during the burst, grew the number of advocates sixfold, left funnel metrics elevated after the promotion ended, and showed in-app placements had the highest conversion while emails drove the most sharing.
