Defensibly Conducting Complex Investigations with FTK® Lab

Konkurransetilsynet (the Norwegian Competition Authority), based in Bergen, enforces competition law and investigates collusion, abuse of dominance, and mergers. Its digital forensics team faced the challenge of managing hundreds of long-running cases containing terabytes of seized data from dawn raids—complete mailboxes, SharePoint sites and system files—while ensuring a defensible chain of custody, fast processing, strong OCR/bookmarking, and an easy-to-learn tool for primarily non-forensic staff.

They implemented FTK Lab, whose distributed processing engine, OCR, bookmarking and collaboration features accelerated ingestion, indexing and review (including privileged-data exclusion) and allowed quick training of new users. The result was faster case turnaround, reliable low-cost operations, the ability to search multiple cases with FTK Plus, and a system that meets court standards so investigators can focus on the work rather than data processing.
