Supporting Creative Freedom on Campus

Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) is a specialist, TEF gold–rated university focused on arts, design, architecture and media, where typography is central to student work. After using a free font manager, the university struggled to track fonts, enforce licenses and ensure consistency across campus machines, so it needed a cost-effective, non-disruptive solution that preserved creative freedom while improving control and flexibility.

NUA deployed Universal Type Server, which lets administrators protect system fonts while granting per‑user privileges so students can use and install their own font sets. The result is a balance of freedom and control, streamlined license management and reliable, anytime/anywhere font access across campus — a setup praised by Kirk Lows‑Chapman for ensuring fonts are available wherever students log in.
