Building a Better Image Distribution Environment

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Albuquerque District Geospatial Unit manages more than 12,000 raster and image files covering 195,000 square miles used daily by scientists and engineers. Their challenge was to create a comprehensive image distribution environment that could serve large MrSID-format archives, reproject imagery on the fly into common coordinate systems, and interoperate with cloud-cached services and existing business systems.

The unit deployed Extensis Express Server alongside Geocortex running on ArcGIS Server, adding Web Mercator support to resolve projection incompatibilities. The combined solution lets them serve in-house MrSID data and cloud imagery from a single enterprise web map service, reproject images on the fly (eliminating costly reprocessing), and maintain flexibility across their back-end and web app stack.
