Accelerates Timeline to Compress and Reproject Over 3 Terabytes of Imagery
Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) needed to compress, reproject and store more than 3 terabytes of imagery as Oracle Spatial/Oracle Database for distribution to warfighters in Iraq and Afghanistan. Faced with an estimated three-month timeline using existing tools—and a requirement to maintain the current ArcIMS workflow while adding Oracle MapViewer—AFSOC engaged Smartronix to find a faster, integrated solution and to identify any bad images.
Smartronix implemented Extensis GeoExpress with the Spatial Express extension to create MrSID/JPEG2000 images, load them into Oracle, and serve them via Oracle MapViewer and ArcIMS. The job was finished in two weeks (24/7 with minimal staff), completing the full 3 TB workflow 4.5× faster than estimated, reducing storage from 3 TB to 190 GB, saving about 1,700 man-hours and eliminating the need to maintain legacy software.
