Leveraging AI-powered Qualitative Analysis for the NSS and Beyond at the University of Westminster

The University of Westminster in London, UK, with over 19,000 students, had been manually thematically analyzing open comments from student surveys for years. Before the 2023-24 academic year, the Institutional Research team focused mainly on National Student Survey free-text comments, a process that was slow and limited by in-house capacity.

The University of Westminster implemented Explorance MLY to analyze open-ended feedback from the NSS and other internal and external surveys. With Explorance, the university said it increased its annual feedback analysis capacity from around 6,000-7,000 comments to 32,000-35,000 comments, while improving the integration of quantitative and qualitative data and helping close the feedback loop more efficiently.
