The largest European railway operator faced the challenge of upgrading its legacy signalling systems and processes to drive a vast digitalisation and modernisation programme. Numerous outdated electronic and mechanical systems for supplier management and testing were not fit for purpose, and the client needed to identify where digitalisation could improve safety, reliability, and the passenger experience. The vendor, Expleo, was brought on for its railway signalling expertise to help manage this transformation.

Expleo developed new digital approaches for homologation, integration testing, and supply management by analysing existing standards and co-creating new concepts in workshops with all client stakeholders. Leveraging knowledge from its advanced automotive sector, Expleo provided fresh perspectives and educated the client on new procedures. The solution enhanced safety and the customer experience while reducing maintenance costs by eliminating the need for trackside signals. Four railways are now in commercial service as a direct result.
