South Middle School, part of Arlington Heights School District 25, faced the challenge of moving student sketchnoting from paper to a digital medium across a fleet of 233 iPads. Carrie Baughcum, a special education teacher, needed a tool that would let students synthesize text, organize ideas, support accessibility and collaboration, and scale beyond simple paper sketches—so she selected Explain Everything (Interactive Whiteboard).

Using iPad + Explain Everything, students explored the app’s tools and adopted a “one idea per slide” workflow, then grouped slides into organized visual notes. Explain Everything’s ease of use, built‑in organization, accessibility features and collaborative options made digital sketchnoting simpler and more engaging; the method became empowering and the preferred sketchnoting approach for many students, while enabling multimedia, sharing and improved visual organization.
