The NSW State Government's Spatial Services division faced the challenge of migrating its critical geographic data systems from legacy proprietary databases to an open source platform as part of its Open Data Initiative. The project involved moving millions of records from three separate databases, Db2 and Informix, to a new environment without disrupting essential services used by emergency services like police and ambulances. Experience Digital was engaged to perform this complex data migration and application rebuild.

Experience Digital implemented a solution using open source tools, primarily PostgreSQL for data storage and a custom pipeline built with Python and SQLAlchemy. Their three-phase approach successfully migrated hundreds of tables and millions of records, creating an automated version-control system within the database.
