Altru Health System, an integrated not-for-profit community health system in Grand Forks, North Dakota, faced growing pressure from rising self-pay volume and high-deductible plans, which increased open balances, bad debt risk, and the burden on staff. To address the challenge, Altru turned to Experian Health’s Collections Optimization Manager to better manage self-pay accounts with data-driven segmentation and collections prioritization.

Using Experian Health’s Collections Optimization Manager, Altru segmented accounts by propensity to pay, tailored collections strategies, and identified Medicaid-eligible patients through Medicare screening to prevent unnecessary collection activity. The result was a 114% increase in collections, more than 4,000 accounts identified for assistance representing nearly $2.7 million within 10 months, along with reduced days in accounts receivable and lower bad debt write-offs.
